Sue Saunders, age 73. Fort Lauderdale, FL

Diagnosed in 1991 at the age 58, Sue helped launch Florida’s first Seniors HIV Intervention Program. While she is not active in peer outreach any longer and has had to cut back on her gardening because of back problems, she continues to bake amazing cookies. Sue has four grown children and one grandson.

Unfortunately SHIP, Broward County’s Senior HIV Intervention Program, was shuttered in 2010 due to budget cuts. The images in Sue’s video portrait of older adults at recreation and in seminars showcase the program’s outreach activities to educate seniors about safe sex in the area’s retirement communities and nursing homes.
